Client Spotlight with Melissa Bury - Live Entertainment Manchester

With over a decade of experience in the live entertainment industry and a passion that started behind the bar at Manchester Academy, Mel Bury has worked her way through the ranks to become General Manager of one of the UK’s most iconic venues, the O2 Apollo. Now a year into her current role, Mel brings a blend of resilience, authenticity, and leadership to the ever evolving world of live events. In this spotlight, we chat with Mel about her journey, the moments that shaped her, and the legacy she hopes to leave behind.

How did you get started in live entertainment?

“I landed a job working on the bars at Manchester Academy. I loved this job and couldn’t quite believe that I was being paid to work at some of my favourite bands’ shows. After that role, I went into supervisory and management positions at various venues, eventually ending up where I am today at the wonderful O2 Apollo!”

Can you share a memorable moment in your career that has had a significant impact on you?

One of the first shows I looked after just as we were reopening venues after Covid. I was very close to changing careers, as I was losing hope that things would ever recover. It was Inhaler at Deaf Institute, and I had a little cry seeing everyone back, singing along to their favourite band!”

What advice would you give to young women who want to enter the entertainment industry?

Proactively seek out opportunities and listen and learn from those more experienced. Keep an open mind and be flexible with your career path. It’s okay not to know what your next move is, not everything is linear, and be prepared to never stop learning.”

In your opinion, what are the key qualities that make a great leader in live?

In no particular order – authenticity, integrity, kindness, drive, resilience, communication.”

Is there a particular person that inspires you?

My mum. If I could have half the patience, kindness and understanding she has, I think I’m doing pretty well.”

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve had in your career and how did you overcome them?

“Finding balance between work and life outside of work. With the very nature of the industry operating at unsociable hours, finding time for yourself and your loved ones is critical. I wouldn’t say I’ve overcome this challenge but I’m most definitely aware and working on it.”

If you were to give your younger self some advice, what would that be?

“Recognise what you can and can’t control – this has been a game changer for me in the past couple of years. As cheesy as it sounds: happiness is a journey, not a destination.”
