Ticketmaster’s latest Sport State of Play insights reveal how fan behaviour is shifting and what it means for teams, leagues and venues looking to grow attendance, engagement and global reach.


Fans Are Going Further for Live Sport
Fans are increasingly building live sport into their lifestyle and travel plans. In the UK, fans are willing to travel an average of 146 miles for a domestic fixture, while 20% would travel more than 5.5 hours for an international event.
This rise in destination-driven fandom is creating new opportunities for teams and venues to deliver connected, experience-led journeys that go beyond the game itself.

Sport Fandom Is Becoming More Global
Fandom is expanding beyond borders, with growing interest in international sport, leagues and competitions.
In the UK:
- 59% of fans say they are more interested in American sport than they were five years ago
- 56% say attending a live U.S. sporting event is on their bucket list
- 24% believe the NFL is one of the fastest-growing sport in the market
The trend is even stronger among Gen Z fans, with 81% saying their interest in American sport has increased over the last five years.
Interest is also translating into deeper engagement. 43% of UK fans own merchandise from an American sport team, while 18% say they would travel internationally to attend an NFL game.
For sport organisations, this signals a major opportunity to grow audiences beyond traditional local markets and turn global interest into live attendance.

Fans Want More Than the Match
Today’s fans are looking for more immersive and entertainment-driven experiences.
According to the report:
- 30% of fans want premium seating experiences
- 28% say live music makes sport events more exciting
- 27% believe live entertainment helps attract new audiences
At the same time, fan interests increasingly overlap across live entertainment. More than half of sport fans who purchase tickets also attend live music events, reinforcing that fans are choosing experiences, not categories.
For teams and venues, creating a compelling matchday atmosphere is becoming just as important as the action on the field.
