Today, 29 August 2018, marks 80 years since Manchester staple – the O2 Apollo – opened its doors for the very first time. English actress Margaret Lockwood held the honours of welcoming the first visitors to what was then a cinema and variety space.
Since 1938, the venue has welcomed the likes of iconic superstars The Beatles, world class boxer Muhammad Ali, New Order, as well as surviving a blitz attack during World War II.
The Apollo has also hosted acclaimed acts such as Queen in 1979, Bruce Springsteen in 1981, Thin Lizzy in 1980, The Clash in 1981, Chemical Brothers in 1997, and Super Furry Animals in 1999.
Looking into the future, the Manchester venue is set to open its doors for fans of comedian Mo Gilligan, country star Kacey Musgraves, pop superstars Black Eyed Peas, Years & Years, Ben Howard, The Streets and more.
Last year, O2 Apollo hosted 118 shows, including the likes of Sigur Ros performing a three night residency, a four night residency by Elbow, and the final ever shows by cult indie stars The Maccabees.
Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, The Ting Tings and Jake Bugg have also taken to the 3.5K capacity venue.

With 80 years under their belt, a host of huge names performing on stage, and more fans and special guests enjoying the entertainment from the stalls, Manchester’s O2 Apollo is set to continue for years to come.
