We paid a visit to the Friends of Anarchy Beer Fest: Tryanuary edition to catch up with the team and check out a carefully curated sample of the finest Indie brewers that the North East has to offer.

Following on from the Friends of Anarchy Beer Fest last summer, this event also celebrated the breweries 8th birthday!

The event showcased the wide range of independent and micro brewers from the North East, from new kids on the block AD Brewing to the much loved and well established Wylam Brewery.

The Brewery Tap is a short hop on the Metro from the City Centre located at Benfield Business Park in an industrial unit which has a fully functioning brewery and an event space that hosts live music events.

The Anarchy Brew team, Daisy Turnell (Marketing Manager), Les Stoker (Head Brewer) and Simon Miles (Co-Owner) are on hand to ensure that everyone is having the best time at this super friendly and relaxed gathering of beer aficionados.

Anarchy Brew launched two new beers on the day; Mosaic Sour – A great little fruity single hop variant sour, and Hit The Juice – A sweet and full-bodied Hazy IPA with a gentle, bitter finish.

With most breweries offering a small number of beers in cask and on keg in multiple styles we were able to sample a wide range. Highlights included:

  • Wylam’s Imperial Machiatto – A double Hazelnut Praline Coffee Porter
  • The Weird Beard and J Wakefield Collaboration Saltacious Plum – a kettle sour laced with juicy British Plum and Blackberry’s then aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels for 10 months
  • Brass Castle Brewery‘s Buddy – A DDH Pale Ale hopped with Ekuanot , one of a series of beers focused on particular hops and named after canine customers who regularly attend the Brass Castle Taphouse
  • Donzoko Brewing Company’s Big Foam – a rustic country style lager with, yep a big foamy head!

Thankfully tasty Burgers from Rib & Rub BBQ were on hand to keep us going before we headed back to Manchester.
